I was amazed at what a different experience it is to go to Kalapana and see the views in the day vs. the night. For dramatic effect, of course, the night can't be beat. But you see more of the landscape and the actual progress the lava has taken in the course of it's flows when you go in the day. It's also fascinating to see the homes and houses built right on the 1982 flows which you cannot see at night. I really enjoy both types of tour (day and night) - they both reveal completely different aspects of the power of Pele.
I have started a new tour called From Summit to Sea. You can see a description on my website www.vavoomhawaii.blogspot.com
It involves just what the title implies - an intimate visit to the top of the summit followed by a hike along the sea with a view of lava streaming down from Pu'u O'o Vent. The "wow factor" is the lava cascading into the ocean and creating a fantastic steam plume. My clients and I have discovered that polarized l ...

It's happening again. I went Wednesday (3/19) with some customers after our Crater Rim Adventure which included an explosion of Halema'uma'u! We left Kilauea around 2pm to see the live lava flows at Kalapana and as I was driving home after the tour, my husband called me on the phone to tell me that the crater had exploded (Halema'uma'u specifically). It either happened after 2pm when we left Kilauea Crater summit...or it was undetectable from where we were on the crater. The park had the routes closed off closest to Halema'uma'u. We were looking at Halema'uma'u from the rear of Volcano House around 2pm and I definitely noticed an alarming amount of gas coming out of it...and it definitely appeared to be escalating. But I did not feel or see an explosion at that time so it must have happened after we left. I was chatting with a friend the other day who was explaining to me why she is an atheist. She told me my problem is that not only do I believe in God but I believe in everything. She called me the antithesis of an atheist! Somehow she is still able to tolerate me! And I guess she's right. I do believe in Jesus. I also believe in Buddha, Pele, Sri Krsna and Jehovah. I believe in Allah, Brahma, Siva and pretty much all the saints. I believe God dwells in you which makes you, reader, a sort of a deity. To take it one step further, God dwells in me too - which makes me a deity too. I believe in Santa Claus (he was St. Nick who was born in the 3rd century in the village of Patara) and yes, I believe in nature sprites. So, in short, I guess it wouldn't surprise anyone that knows me that on January 30th, 2008, while guiding a tour up to the volcano (some sweet folks from Humboldt, California), I decided to take up a nice orchid plant and offer it to the Goddess P ...
